Synopsis

Excerpt
A day later, and many, many, many meetings with my dad, legal team, and Boston police and detectives, I’m a shell of the man I was a week ago. I sit on the sofa of my leased apartment, confined to these four walls thanks to a pandemic and the herd of bloodthirsty paparazzi staked out in front of the building.
Rome is on my phone reading me the riot act for not answering him for days.
“This ain’t the big Lou I know and love. Come on, man. I get the severity of the situation, but you cannot stay in the fetal position over this. Don’t you dare let these motherfuckers tell the story of who you are. You show the world who Louie DelloRusso is. You always have.”
He’s trying to infuse some fight back into me. It isn’t working this time.
“Rome, I don’t give a shit about anything except Valentina. You don’t get that this girl is my entire world. Lies and jealousy are causing me to lose her. I can’t just get over that. I don’t give a fuck about people’s opinions of me. I only care about her,” I admit to my best friend.
I hear him sigh.
“Lou, you know I love V, but if she’s sitting there after knowing you like she does and can believe all this bullshit about you, maybe she isn’t the one.”
I snap back, “Are you fucking insane? Are you hearing yourself right now? You know she was made for me. I was ready to propose when all this shit happened. She loves me, I know she does, but she’s being told lies by those fucking corrupt cops while her brother is barely hanging on to his life. I just need to talk to her. I need her to understand.”
“Lou, all I understand is you’re being represented in the media as a fucking pariah. I get you love Valentina and want to explain everything, but you also have to be practical. You can’t lose your woman and your career.”
Rome tries to talk sense into me, but everything he’s saying sounds like an insult to me.
“I gotta go. You don’t get it. I don’t give a fuck about my career right now,” I fire back.
“Lou, you better care. You’re being blacklisted in this town, and even if you don’t care, it will affect your entire family.”
He continues to defend his point, which in my heart I know is valid.
“We’ll talk soon,” I say, and end the call before he has a chance to launch into another sermon.
