"God, what am I going to do?" he murmured, closing his eyes and letting his head fall forward against the cold stone. The weight of his feelings threatened to suffocate him, leaving him gasping for air.

The sound of laughter drifted through the night air, pulling him from the depths of his despair. For a moment, Malcolm allowed himself to imagine a world where he and Lila were together.

But reality had a cruel way of intruding upon even the most beautiful of dreams. He knew in his heart that there was no turning back from this revelation. With each beat, he reaffirmed his resolve to protect Lila from any threats that might arise, even if it meant keeping his feelings for her locked away forever.

Lila's laughter rang out like a melody, sweet and clear, drawing him back to the present. He looked up to see her walking hand in hand with Thad, her face bright with happiness. As she gazed at Thad, her eyes sparkled with adoration that seemed to light up the night. It was a look Malcolm had seen countless times before.

"Thank you for inviting me tonight, love," Thad said, his voice filled with affection as he kissed the back of her hand.

"Of course! I’m so glad you could make it," Lila replied, giving his hand a gentle squeeze.

Watching them together, Malcolm felt as though someone had reached into his chest and twisted his heart with an icy grip. He longed to be the one receiving that tender look and casual kiss from Lila, but deep down, he knew it would never happen. The truth was right there, staring him in the face - Lila belonged with Thad, not with him. And as much as it pained him to admit it, he couldn't deny the love they shared.

Unable to bear the sight of their happiness any longer, Malcolm turned away, his thoughts drifting back to the pact they had made years ago. "If I don't have anyone in my life and you don't have anyone in yours by the time you turn 30, we'll get married. If we have someone, we will be best friends for the rest of our lives."

The memory of that conversation was etched into his soul, a constant reminder of the promise they had made to each other. In his heart of hearts, he’d always hoped they would end up together, but life had other plans. Lila had found her someone - Thad - and Malcolm was left to grapple with the reality of their friendship remaining just that.
