Meet bad boy pitcher, Zach Pritchett…

Two things I love: baseball and Lacey Stark. Back in college, I had them both. But after graduation, I made the biggest mistake of my life. I let Lacey go.

Five years later, I can’t complain. A Cy Young winner, I’ve achieved what I set out to do–pitching in the Major Leagues. Life is great.

Until it’s not.

And the day it all went south? The day Lacey Stark appeared at my post press conference. The reality of not having her slams against my chest. Lacey’s still sexy as hell, sporting more curves and a little more sass. Pitching in the Majors isn’t the only thing I want anymore.

Now, it’s time to go after what I’ve denied myself all these years. I want Lacey and will stop at nothing until I make her mine.

Lacey seems determined to stay away, but we belong together. I know this. I just need to convince her to give me another chance. Because one thing is guaranteed, I won’t stop until she’s back in my arms.

“I think we both know Zach and my ship sailed a long time ago.”

“I’m not so sure. You’re all he’s talked about for the last three weeks. Lacey this. Lacey that.”

“Oh, stop.” I push his chest again, but he doesn’t even budge. He just laughs instead.

“In all seriousness, Zach does want to see you. Can you come with me?”

“I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

Jax purses his lips for a second.

“I can still kick his ass for hurting you.” He quirks an eyebrow. “I may have to wait till postseason, though.”

“There will be no kicking of any ass.” My teasing tone trails off as my mood turns somber.

“Ya know, I told him he was an idiot for letting you go, but I honestly believe he thought he was doing the right thing. There isn’t any doubt in my mind that he loved you.”

I look up to the ceiling and swallow hard, blinking back the threatening tears. I don’t understand what’s wrong with me. I was over him. I mean, I am over him. I think.

“It’s in the past and doesn’t matter. What’s seeing him now going to do but stir up hurt feelings?”

“Those feelings don’t have to hurt,” a deep voice says behind me.

My stomach plummets, and I turn toward the deep blue eyes currently haunting my thoughts.

“Zach,” I whisper.

“I’m going to take off and leave you two to discuss things.” Jax leans down for another hug and whispers against my ear, “Just hear him out.”

I continue to stare at Zach, surprised that he came to find me.

“Can we go somewhere a little more private?” Zach extends his hand, and the gleam in his eye acts as if it’s challenging me. At my hesitation, he drops his hand and sighs. “Please?”

Against my better judgment, I nod.

“Thank you,” he says as he turns and steps forward.

I have no idea where we’re going, but I follow him down the corridor anyway. About fifty feet into the hallway, we come across an unmarked door to the right. Zach wiggles the door handle and slips his head inside the room when the door freely opens.

“This works.”

We step over the threshold, and as soon as I’m clear, he releases the handle. My eyes adjust to the scant amount of lighting peeking through the four tiny block windows on the far wall. The door slams shut, and I halt as Zach closes the gap between us.

“Go out with me tonight.”

I take a step back, but Zach matches my footing until I’m backed against the cold metal door. He arches his arms over my head and leans forward, his chest pressing against mine. He studies me for a second and then repeats, “Go out with me tonight.”

“I can’t.” My voice squeaks, and I hate how desperate I sound.

“Can’t or won’t.”

He brings his face within a breath’s distance away, our lips barely brushing. My heart races and with each rise of my chest, our bodies connect, waking every nerve ending.

“Then I’ll come over to your house. I know your address.”

A slight gasp escapes my mouth, and I try to ignore the sudden rush of heat. There’s no way Zach can come to my home. He just can’t.

“I’ll meet you. Anywhere,” I say. God, I hope he doesn’t question my sudden compliance.

“I’ll pick you up around eight.”

“No.” I swallow, trying to keep from panicking. “I’ll meet you at your hotel, and we’ll go from there.”

The corners of his mouth rise to a slow seductive smile. “Meet in the lobby at the Grand Hyatt at eight.”

With the slightest inclination, I nod. He stares a moment longer, and I desperately want to escape. But there’s a small part of me that wants to close the minute space between us. His gaze drops to my quivering lip, just as he did in the past when I knew he wanted to kiss me, but instead of leaning forward like I think he’s going to do, he backs away.

“I need to get back before Coach has my ass in the ringer.” He sidesteps around me and opens the door. “I’ll see you tonight.”

I don’t respond as his long legs carry him down the hallway away from me. My heart paces back to normal, but wow, that was intense. This emptiness in my chest proves one thing. I wanted that kiss, more than anything. Jesus, how am I going to be strong enough to withstand tonight? Newsflash. I’m not.
